Iconic BMW Features Through the Years
With more than a century of automotive design under their belts, BMW has created some of the most famous cars on the road, and they’re not done yet. These features appeared on some of BMW’s most iconic models over the years, from the very first 1927 BMW 3/15 DA-1 to the modern BMW M series. Take a walk down memory lane with us at BMW of Northwest Arkansas as we take a look at some of our favorite classic features.

1971 BMW 2002 Tii
The classic BMW 2002 remains one of the most iconic highway cruisers, with a distinctive design that can be recognized a mile off. The 1971 BMW 2002 Tii upped the ante, adding mechanical fuel injection to the engine for an even more efficient, powerful drive. That paved the way for the advanced fuel-injection technology in modern BMW vehicles, delivering more power with less gas.

1972 BMW 1602 Electric
Yes, you read that year right. Decades before the modern lineup of new BMW EVs, they were already working on electric prototypes like the 1972 BMW 1602 Electric, exhibited at the 1972 Munich Olympics. With a range of 37 miles and a top speed of 62 miles per hour, this EV never made it to the market, but it showcases their ongoing commitment to electric technology.

1978 BMW M1
With a look that’s out of this world and a powerful, responsive engine, it’s no wonder the 1978 BMW M1 went on to inspire the M Series of high-performance BMW cars. This aggressive monster was the first BMW model to feature an engine mounted in the middle for performance that dominated at the track. Decades later, that racing heart is still beating in the BMW lineup.

2025 BMW M8
The spirit of aggressive driving is alive and well in this modern speed demon. There’s a twin-turbocharged, eight-cylinder engine under the hood for overwhelming performance — up to 617 horsepower — and a zero-to-60-mph speed of just 3.0 seconds. Plus, with M xDrive, the 2025 BMW M8 is just as fun to drive around city streets as it is on the track.
