BMW And Hyundai Partner To Develop Next-Gen In-Car Connectivity

BMW and Hyundai joined forces to help develop the next-generation of vehicle networking and connectivity technology. The two automakers have joined global tech firms Broadcom, NXP, Freescale, and Harman to establish the Special Interest Group (SIG).

This is a partnership that BMW of Northwest Arkansas expects to work. First, BMW and Hyundai do not compete in the same segment; therefore, the German automaker doesn't have to worry about Hyundai getting all up in their grille, and vice versa. Second, both automakers have previously proven their willingness to take large strides to keep drivers connected to the world from their car.

The ultimate goal of SIG is to promote wide-scale adoption of Ethernet-based, in-car connectivity technology to the point that is becomes an industry standard. This includes designing criteria the entire auto industry can use and develop applications to support network migration. In addition to addressing mandates for optimizing safety, driver and passenger comfort and infotainment, BMW, as well as the other members of SIG,  will strive to mitigate network complexity and cabling costs.

The insight BMW brings to the table is, of course, their first-hand experience using Ethernet capability. The luxury automaker has been designing vehicles supporting this technology for approximately three years, now. When complete, the new, more cohesive technology is expected to bring a new breed of uncomplicated advanced telematics and safety to both BMW and Hyundai drivers.
